BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University volleyball outside hitter Kathryn Mertens has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District college division second team.

Mertens, a senior from Olympia (graduate of Olympia High School), is a biology/anthropology major with a 3.90 grade point average (4.0 scale).

The 5-foot-10 Mertens has played in every set this season, averaging 1.95 kills on .277 hitting, 0.60 blocks and 0.48 digs.

The Vikings, 16-2 overall and leading the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings at 13-1, have won their last eight matches. They are ranked No.13 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll and No.2 in the West Region.

Western is at Seattle Pacific tonight (7 p.m.). The Falcons, ranked No.18 nationally and No.3 in the West Region, are 21-2 overall and second in the GNAC at 13-2.

Nominations and voting for the ESPN Academic All-America program are conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
