BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior opposite Joellee Buckner has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Co-Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office in Portland, Ore.
Buckner (Colville, WA) helped lead the Vikings to a 2-0 week with victories at home over Alaska Anchorage (3-1) and Alaska Fairbanks (3-0) as the No. 8-ranked and GNAC-leading Vikings extended their win streak to 14 straight.
The senior averaged 3.71 kills per set during the week without a single error on 68 attacks (.382 attack percentage). Buckner added a pair of service aces and 4 block assists, averaging 5.29 digs per set and totaling 30.0 points during the week.
Against Alaska Anchorage last Thursday, she finished with 15 kills and 28 digs to record her 11th double-double of the season. Buckner nearly had another double-double against Alaska Fairbanks, totaling 11 kills and 9 digs.
For the season, Buckner ranks among conference leaders in multiple statistical categories. She is 8th in hitting percentage (.276), 8th in digs (4.69/set), 11th in points (3.60/set) and 13th in kills (2.93/set).
Buckner has appeared in 116 games in her career (T-12th most in WWU history) and has helped the Vikings to a combined 92-24 record (.793) during that time. She ranks among the top 25 for WWU career leaders in a range of categories, including 5th in digs (1,341), 17th in total blocks (259) and 21st in kills (798). She is also 22nd in GNAC history among all-time leaders in digs.
She shared the weekly accolade with Madi Farrell of Northwest Nazarene and earned a weekly honor for the third time during the season, including her second GNAC Offensive Player of the Week award. She was previously named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 2-8 before being named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 16-22.
In addition to the trio of awards for Buckner, sophomore middle blocker Joslyn Bopray (Spokane, WA/Lewis & Clark) earned defensive honors for the week of Sept. 4-10 while junior outside hitter Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) earned offensive honors last week (Oct. 23-29).
WWU is 21-3 overall and leads the conference with a 15-1 record in GNAC play. The Vikings travel to face Seattle Pacific (Nov. 9, 7 pm) and Saint Martin’s (Nov. 11, 8 pm) this week before closing out the regular-season schedule at home next week against Northwest Nazarene (Nov. 16, 7 pm) and Central Washington (Nov. 18, 7 pm).
