BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Western Washington University placed six student-athletes, four for the second straight year, on the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star Volleyball Team announced today.
Heading the Viking repeaters was middle blocker Kathryn Mertens (Jr., Olympia), a biology/anthropology major with a 3.89 (4.0 scale) grade point average.
Also among that foursome were outside hitter Jordyn Bailey (Jr., Wenatche
e), a business administration/international business major with a 3.47 GPA, libero Allison Gotz (Jr., Bothell/Archbishop Murphy), a psychology major with a 3.39 GPA, and outside hitter Megan Amundson (Jr., Stanwood), a kinesiology/health and fitness major with a 3.37 GPA.
Completing Western's academic all-stars were middle blocker Emily Jepsen (So., Kennewick/Kamiakin), who has a 3.79 GPA, and defensive specialist Haleigh Adkins (So., Puyallup/Rogers), who has a 3.31 GPA. Both have yet to declare a major.
The Vikings complete their season Saturday (7 p.m.), playing host to Montana State Billings in a GNAC match on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

Forty-Two Named to GNAC Volleyball Academic Team
SPOKANE - A total of 42 student-athletes have been named to the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference volleyball team.
Alaska Fairbanks placed the most players on the academic team with eight. Northwest Nazarene had seven selections and Western Washington and Central Washington had six each.
Jennifer Holland, a civil engineering sophomore from Sterling, Alaska, has the top GPA with a perfect 4.00 mark. Among seniors, Lisa Martini and Amy Herron, both from Western Oregon, have the best GPAs with 3.96 and 3.93 averages, respectively.
Eleven players - Alexa Sherman, Hannah Armstrong, Jessica Hill and Megan Thigpen, all from Alaska Fairbanks; Deidre Scheidt and Erin Norris of Central Washington; Cammy Dranginis of Northwest Nazarene, and Lisa Martini, Amy Herron, Laura Sakala and Danielle English, all from Western Oregon - were selected to the team for the third year in a row. Fifteen other players were repeat selections from last year.
