BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Western Washington University libero Samantha Hutchinson has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 3-9, receiving the honor for the third time this season.
Hutchinson, a junior from University Place (graduate of Curtis High School), had 49 digs last week as WWU swept both Western Oregon and Saint Martin's. That included 32 against WOU, equaling the fifth highest total in GNAC history for a three-set contest.
Former Viking All-American Courtney Schneider, who had three-set match totals of 35, 34, 34, 33, 32 and 32, is the only other player in conference history to record as many as 32.
On the season, Hutchinson ranks second nationally in digs per game at 6.93 and is third among WWU career leaders in digs with 1,562.
Last year, Hutchinson, who was a second-team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American, finished No.5 nationally in digs, averaging 6.41.
WWU, 19-3 overall and ranked No.10 in the AVCA DII Top 25 Poll, is tied for first place in the GNAC at 12-2 with Alaska Anchorage. The defending champion Vikings are at UAA on Thursday, Nov. 14, for a conference counter.
