Phelps and Buckner Sweep GNAC Weekly Awards

Nov. 13, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior outside hitter Abby Phelps and junior libero/defensive specialist Aubrey Buckner have swept this week’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors for the period of Nov. 6-12, announced Monday by the conference office in Portland, Ore.
Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) earned GNAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Buckner (Colville, WA) was named the conference Defensive Player of the Week. The duo helped lead the nationally No. 5-ranked Vikings (23-3, 17-1 GNAC) to a 2-0 record last week with road wins at Seattle Pacific (3-2) and Saint Martin’s (3-0).
WWU is riding a 16-match winning streak heading into the final week of the regular season and hosts Northwest Nazarene (Thursday, 7 pm) and Central Washington (Saturday, 7 pm) on WECU Court at Carver Gym in matches to decide the conference title. The Vikings have had a player win a GNAC weekly award in each of the last four weeks, and have had seven total honorees this season.
“These are two great and well deserved honors for Aubrey and Abby, who contributed to a total team effort in tough road wins at Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin’s,” said head coach Diane Flick-Williams.
Phelps recorded a double-double (kills/digs) in each win last week, averaging 4.50 kills per set, to go along with 0.38 aces/set, 4.25 digs/set and 0.62 blocks/set. She tied her career-high with 19 kills in the five-set victory at SPU, and factored into each of the last three points in the 15-13 win in the fifth set with a block and a pair of kills.
For the season, Phelps is 2nd in the GNAC and 27th in NCAA Division II averaging 4.01 kills per set. She leads the conference with 20 double-doubles, and is also listed among league leaders in points per set (3rd, 4.61), hitting percentage (.259, 13th), aces per set (7th, 0.33) and digs (8th, 4.70). This is the fourth GNAC weekly honor of her career, earning two awards last season and one defensive award earlier this season.
Buckner anchored the Vikings defense averaging a team-high 5.12 digs per set (41 total digs) in the two road matches. She had 28 digs in the five-set win at SPU and recorded 13 digs at Saint Martin’s. The junior ranks 5th in the GNAC averaging 5.00 digs per set, currently the 15th-best mark in WWU single-season history. This is the first career GNAC weekly honor for Aubrey, joining her older sister Joellee Buckner who is a three-time GNAC Player of the Week this season.
