BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
For the second straight year, the Western Washington University volleyball team was denied one of eight berths in the West Regional of the NCAA Division II National Tournament after being ranked among the top eight in the last regular-season regional poll and winning its final match.
The Vikings were rated No.8 in last week's poll and swept Montana State Billings on Saturday to finish 17-10.
In 2008, Western was sixth in the final regular-season rating and won its last two matches prior to the selections, finishing 21-3.
The host and No.1 seed is Cal State San Bernardino, 29-1 overall and ranked No.2 nationally in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA II Top 25 Poll. The Coyotes, who won the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship at 21-1, have reached the West Region title match each of the last nine years, capturing titles in 2003, 2004 and 2008.
Rounding out the selections are No.2 seed UC San Diego, 28-1 and ranked No.4 nationally, No.3 seed Sonoma State, 22-7 and ranked No.18 nationally, No.4 seed Hawaii Hilo, 25-1 and the Pacific West Conference champion, No.5 seed Alaska Anchorage, 22-6 and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion, No.6 seed Cal State L.A., 21-8 and ranked No.20 nationally, No.7 seed San Francisco State, 20-10, and No.8 seed Seattle Pacific, 16-11.
Western tied for third place in the GNAC standings at 10-6. The Vikings last went to regionals in 2007 when they won the school's first West Region title, going to the Elite Eight and reaching the national championship match.
Western also went to regionals in 2006 and made three straight appearances from 2001 to 2003.
Western coach Diane Flick completed her 10th year with a career record of 213-60. Her .780 winning percentage ranks eighth among NCAA II active coaches.

INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will be participating in the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship. Eight teams were selected from each of the following eight regions: Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West.
Eight eight-team regionals will be played at on-campus sites. Regional competition will be single-elimination, best three-of-five game matches and will not include a third-place match. The winners of each of the eight regionals will advance to the finals, December 3-5, on the campus of a participating institution. Competition at the finals site will be single-elimination, best three-of-five game matches.
