BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Bailey Jones (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) and setter Laurie Yearout (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) were both named for the third straight year, heading five members of the Western Washington University volleyball team picked to the 2012 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic all-star team released today.

WWU middle blocker Emily Boerger (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) was picked for the second consecutive time. Recognized for the first time were outside hitter Kelsey Moore (So., Bellevue/Newport) and middle blocker Kayla Erickson (So., Gig Harbor/Peninsula).

Jones, an industrial design major, is maintaining a 3.86 (4.0 scale) grade point average; and Yearout, an English Literature major, has a 3.63 GPA.

Yearout ranks fifth nationally among NCAA Division II statistical leaders in assists with a 12.00 average. She is fourth among WWU career leaders in assists with 2,959.

Boerger is an anthropology and biology major with a 3.86 GPA. Moore is a business administration and international business major with a 3.48 GPA, and Erickson is a general studies major with a 3.28 GPA.

To qualify for the GNAC academic team an athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.20 and be in the at least the second season of competition at their university.

Great Northwest Athletic Conference

Volleyball: 40 Earn GNAC Volleyball Academic All-Conference Honors (Nov. 14, 2012)

PORTLAND, Ore. - A total of 40 student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference volleyball team.

Leading the academic team with a GPA of 3.95 is Taylor Adams of Montana State Billings. Among seniors Shelby Swanson of Seattle Pacific has the top grade point average with a 3.89 mark.

Swanson is one of seven student-athletes along with Nikkie Viotto of Alaska Anchorage, Jody Lutz of Montana State Billings, Danielle Reese and Samantha Ward of Western Oregon and Bailey Jones and Laurie Yearout of Western Washington who were selected to the team for the third time. Ten other players were repeat selections from last year.

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
