Vikings Take On NNU In NCAA West Regional Semifinal

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- For the third consecutive season, the Western Washington University volleyball team has advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships West Region Semifinal and will take on GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene Friday evening at 5 pm in Van Dyne Gym. 

The Vikings are coming off a 3-1 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Thursday (26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18) to advance to Friday's semifinal, while the Nighthawks outlasted Central Washington in 5 set in the other quarterfinal matchup in the GNAC side of the bracket. 

WWU enters the match with a 26-3 overall record and has won 19 consecutive matches. The Vikings last defeat came on Sept. 16 at NNU in four sets. WWU avenged the loss to the Nighthawks with a 3-0 sweep in Bellingham on Nov. 16 to clinch the GNAC title, WWU's eighth conference title. 

Abby's Big Night: 
Junior outside hitter and GNAC Player of the Year Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) is coming off a career performance with 28 kills and 13 digs in the win over Anchorage. Phelps, an AVCA First Team All-West Region selection, has recorded 23 double-doubles on the season with a current string of eight consecutive.

NCAA Championships: The Vikings are making their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Championships and 12th overall appearance...own an all-time record of 15-11 in GNAC play...WWU and NNU have never met in the NCAA Championships.

Series vs. NNU: WWU is 36-9 all-time vs. NNU, going 1-1 vs. the Nighthawks each of the last four seasons.

What's on the Line: A win tonight would send the Vikings to their third consecutive West Regional Championship game...in the other side of the bracket, No. 1-seed California Baptist (3-2 win over Sonoma State) and No. 4-seed Cal State San Bernardino (3-2 win over Azusa Pacific) will play at 7:30 pm for a spot in the regional championship game (7 pm Saturday night).
