WWU's Marlayna Geary named first-team AVCA All-American
Dec. 3, 2012
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior outside hitter Marlayna Geary (Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) was a first-team selection and sophomore libero Samantha Hutchinson (University Place/Curtis) received second-team recognition on the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America Team. Geary is just the fifth WWU player to earn AVCA first-team honors and the first outside hitter. She ranked 14th nationally among NCAA II leaders in kills (4.12 average per set, 396 total) and 15th in points (4.72, 453.5). Geary was a first-team AVCA and Daktronics West Region all-star and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She led the league in kills and points as well as having a GNAC-best 18 double-doubles in kills and digs. Geary finished her four-year career with 1,354 kills, second among WWU leaders and just 25 shy of the school record. Geary also had 983 digs, 10th all-time for the Vikings, falling17 short of becoming just the fourth WWU player to reach the 1,000 plateau in both categories. Hutchinson was a first-team AVCA West Region all-star and a Daktronics second-team choice. She earned GNAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a first-team all-league pick. Hutchinson ranked fifth nationally in digs (6.41, 615). She already IS eighth among WWU career leaders in that category with 1,077 in two seasons. Geary and Hutchinson also were picked to the West Regional all-tournament team and each earned GNAC Player of the Week honors two times. Geary received MVP honors at both the Western Oregon and Sonoma State tournaments. WWU, rated No.15 in the AVCA/NCAA II Coaches' Top 25 Poll, finished its season 24-4. The Vikings won the GNAC championship with a 16-2 record to earn an automatic berth at regionals where they reached the semifinals before losing the eventual champion Brigham Young Hawaii.
